Welcome to Headstones and Microphones where we use AI to step into the past through a researched, first-person simulation of history's most interesting people. I am your host, Calvin. While we’ve added some creative storytelling, our goal is to inspire your own study of these fascinating lives. Now, let’s meet our guest.

Calvin

Today, we have a true icon of music, film, and kindness. From the halls of Rydell High to the top of the pop charts, she was a symbol of positivity and grace. For those who may somehow not know who you are... who are you?

White Female Guest

I’m Olivia Newton-John. Most people know me as Sandy from Grease, or perhaps they remember me singing "Physical" in those colorful headbands! But more than anything, I’ve always seen myself as a singer, a mother, and a storyteller who just loved to bring a little light into the world.

Calvin

You certainly did that! Let’s go back to the very beginning. When and where were you born?

White Female Guest

I was born on September 26, 1948, in a lovely place called Cambridge, England. I didn’t stay there long, though! When I was just five years old, my family packed up and moved across the world to Melbourne, Australia.

Calvin

And what was your given name at birth?

White Female Guest

It was Olivia Newton-John! My father was Brinley Newton-John and my mother was Irene Born.

Calvin

Is there a story behind your birth name?

White Female Guest

Not a specific "story" per se, but my family history is quite academic! My grandfather was actually Max Born, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist. So, there were a lot of brains in the family! I think they expected me to be a scholar, but my heart was always set on the stage.

Calvin

Melbourne is a long way from Cambridge! What was your hometown like growing up?

White Female Guest

Australia was just wonderful. It felt so open and free. I remember it being very sunny and filled with space to run around. It really shaped that "Aussie" spirit people always saw in me—that easygoing, friendly nature.

Calvin

What was your family life like?

White Female Guest

It was quite academic on the surface. My father was a professor of German, so there were always books and deep conversations around. I was the youngest of three children. My parents did eventually divorce when I was still in grammar school, which was very difficult at the time, but we remained close-knit in our own way.

Calvin

What kind of kid were you?

White Female Guest

I was very sensitive and absolutely animal-crazy! I used to drive my parents mad because I wanted to save every creature I found. I was a bit of a dreamer, always humming to myself.

Calvin

What were your biggest fears growing up?

White Female Guest

Oh, I think like many children, I feared being alone or not being "good enough." But honestly, my biggest fear was that I wouldn’t be able to have pets! My parents were a bit strict about that early on, and I just wanted a house full of dogs and horses.

Calvin

What did you dream of becoming as a child?

White Female Guest

Since I loved animals so much, I desperately wanted to be a veterinarian! But then I realized how much science and math was involved, and let’s just say those weren’t exactly my strongest subjects in school. So, I pivoted to thinking I could be a mounted policewoman—just so I could ride horses all day!

Calvin

What were some of your favorite activities in school?

White Female Guest

Anything to do with performing! By the time I was fifteen, I had formed an all-girl group called Sol 4 with my schoolmates. We’d sing at my brother-in-law’s coffee bar. I also loved drama and anything that let me be creative.

Calvin

What was your first job?

White Female Guest

My "first" real professional work came from winning a Hayley Mills lookalike contest when I was twelve! That led to some local acting work. But my first musical break was winning a talent contest on a show called "Sing, Sing, Sing."

Calvin

Was there a moment where you realized you were different from everyone else?

White Female Guest

I don’t know if I felt "different," but I felt a very certain "pull." When I won that talent contest, the prize was a trip to England. I remember feeling this immense weight of decision—do I stay in school or do I follow this music? I chose the music.

Calvin

What’s a decision that changed everything for you, but felt small at the time?

White Female Guest

Moving back to England as a teenager. I actually didn’t want to go! I missed my boyfriend and my life in Australia so much that I tried to book a flight back home in secret. My mother found out and stopped me—she insisted I stay and use the opportunity. If she hadn't found that ticket, I never would have met the producers or made the connections that led to my career.

Calvin

What was your biggest break?

White Female Guest

It has to be Grease. I was actually very nervous about playing Sandy because I was twenty-nine playing a teenager! I insisted on a screen test with John Travolta first to see if we had chemistry. Luckily, we clicked instantly, and the rest is history.

Calvin

What were your biggest struggles before success?

White Female Guest

When I first moved back to London, it was quite lonely. I was doing a double act with my friend Pat Carroll, and we played all these smoky little clubs and army bases. There were many nights where we wondered if we were getting anywhere at all.

Calvin

Did you ever consider quitting?

White Female Guest

Oh, during those early London days, I nearly did! I missed Australia so much I felt physically ill with homesickness. But my mother was my rock; she wouldn't let me give up on my talent.

Calvin

Were there any specific daily habits or routines that you feel are essential to your success?

White Female Guest

I’ve always believed in the power of a positive mindset. I started every day with a sense of gratitude. Later in life, I became very focused on "Livwise" living—eating clean, lots of greens, and staying active.

Calvin

What job would you have had if fame never happened?

White Female Guest

I probably would have worked with animals in some capacity. Maybe running a sanctuary or a rescue farm. I actually eventually fulfilled that dream by having many animals on my own property!

Calvin

What was your life like before fame?

White Female Guest

It was very simple. It was about school, friends, and the coffee shop scene in Melbourne. I was just a girl who liked to sing folk songs with her guitar.

Calvin

How did relationships change after success?

White Female Guest

It’s a bit like a whirlwind! You meet so many incredible people, but you also have to learn who your true friends are. I stayed very close to Pat and, of course, John Travolta became a lifelong friend. Success can make things complicated, but kindness keeps them simple.

Calvin

Did fame bring happiness?

White Female Guest

Fame itself is just a thing that happens. Happiness came from the work—the singing and the acting—and the people I met because of it. The "fame" part could be quite overwhelming, honestly.

Calvin

What was the downside of becoming famous?

White Female Guest

The lack of privacy. It’s hard to just "be" sometimes. And of course, the rumors. People feel like they own a piece of you, and they can say things that aren't always true.

Calvin

What misconceptions did people have about you?

White Female Guest

For a long time, people thought I was just "Sweet Sandy" or that I was very "mellow." But I had a lot of strength! I fought for things I believed in, like animal rights and the environment, long before it was trendy.

Calvin

What was your darkest moment?

White Female Guest

My first cancer diagnosis in 1992 was a huge shock. It was the same week my father passed away. It felt like the world was crashing down all at once.

Calvin

What past regrets did you carry, that you spoke about?

White Female Guest

I don’t like to dwell on regrets, but I suppose I wish I had spoken up more for myself in my younger years. I was often very polite and "nice," even when I should have been firm.

Calvin

What’s something people misunderstood about your life?

White Female Guest

People often didn't realize how much work went into making things look "easy." Whether it was a dance routine or a vocal take, I was a bit of a perfectionist!

Calvin

Tell me about a time when everything went wrong and how did you handle it?

White Female Guest

In the early 90s, my business venture Koala Blue went through some very public financial difficulties. It was heartbreaking because I put so much of my heart into it. I handled it by focusing on my health and my daughter, Chloe. Family always brings you back to what matters.

Calvin

Did fame and fortune change your life?

White Female Guest

It gave me a platform. It allowed me to build the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre in Melbourne. That is the thing I am most proud of—using that "fortune" to help others heal.

Calvin

Who had the biggest influence on your life?

White Female Guest

My mother, Irene. She was the one who pushed me to stay in England and follow my dreams. She had such a strong spirit.

Calvin

What was life like in your final years?

White Female Guest

It was peaceful. I lived on my ranch in Southern California with my husband John, surrounded by nature and my animals. I stayed active and focused on my foundation work. I was always looking for the "Liv On" moment—finding light even in the hard times.

Calvin

What were you working on in your career before you passed away?

White Female Guest

I was still recording! I did a lovely duet with my daughter Chloe called "You Have to Believe," and I was very involved in the 40th-anniversary celebrations for Grease.

Calvin

When and where did you pass away?

White Female Guest

I passed away on August 8, 2022, at my home in Southern California.

Calvin

What’s a random fact about you most people have never heard?

White Female Guest

I once refused to tour Japan until they changed certain tuna fishing practices to protect dolphins. I was very serious about my environmental activism!

Calvin

What’s the craziest rumor ever told about you?

White Female Guest

Oh, over the years there were so many "secret health" rumors and strange stories about my personal life. I usually just laughed them off. If you listen to the rumors, you'll never have any peace!

Calvin

What was your most unique habit?

White Female Guest

I was a big believer in tinctures and natural herbs. I’d have my little potions everywhere! My husband John is an expert in plant medicine, so our house was like a wonderful little apothecary.

Calvin

What was your favorite food?

White Female Guest

I loved fresh, healthy things—I even wrote a cookbook called Livwise! But if I’m being honest, a good piece of dark chocolate was always a favorite treat.

Calvin

Did you have a favorite restaurant?

White Female Guest

I loved Gaia Retreat & Spa in Australia. The food there is just spectacular and so fresh.

Calvin

What was your favorite book?

White Female Guest

I loved anything that was uplifting or spiritual. I read a lot of books on healing and the connection between the mind and the body.

Calvin

Did you have any known rivalries?

White Female Guest

No! I really tried to stay away from that. I loved supporting other women in the industry.

Calvin

Tell us a story nobody talks about.

White Female Guest

People talk about the "Physical" video, but they don't realize how much we were giggling behind the scenes. We were trying so hard to make it funny because the song was actually quite cheeky for the time!

Calvin

What’s your funniest behind-the-scenes moment?

White Female Guest

During the filming of Xanadu, I was dancing with the legendary Gene Kelly. I was so intimidated, but he was the kindest man. At one point, I actually tripped and fell right in front of him—the Great Gene Kelly! We both just burst out laughing.

Calvin

Did you ever prank someone?

White Female Guest

John Travolta and I used to tease each other constantly. We had a very playful relationship on set. I wasn't a big "prankster," but I loved a good laugh.

Calvin

What was the most outlandish purchase you made?

White Female Guest

I’m not a very "flashy" person, but I suppose buying a whole ranch for my animals might seem outlandish to some! To me, it was just home.

Calvin

What advice would you give people chasing success?

White Female Guest

Be kind to yourself and others. Success is wonderful, but it’s the love you give and receive that actually stays with you. And always, always keep a positive heart.

Calvin

Olivia, thank you so much for sharing these stories. Do you have any closing remarks or anything else you'd like to say to the listeners before we sign off?

White Female Guest

Just thank you for remembering me and for keeping the music alive. Life is a gift, so make sure you enjoy every moment and spread a little love wherever you go. Thank you for having me, Calvin! It was truly lovely.

Calvin

It was an absolute honor. We’ve journeyed from the stages of London to the ranch in California, seeing the heart of a woman who was truly "hopelessly devoted" to making the world a better place. Thank you, Olivia, for coming on the show.

Calvin

And that wraps up another conversation from beyond the grave. Thanks for joining us on The Headstones and Microphones Podcast. Remember—legends may die, but their stories never do. Please help spread the word by sharing and following the pod.
