Oh, it was loud, busy, and full of love! I was the fourth of twelve children, so you can imagine our little one-room cabin was never quiet. We didn't have much money, but we had plenty of family harmony and faith

I was a dreamer, through and through. I was high-spirited, imaginative, always singing a tune, and practically raised outdoors with my brothers and sisters

I suppose like any kid in a big, struggling family, my biggest fear was not having enough, or seeing my parents worry about how to keep us all fed and warm

I always dreamed of being a star. Even when we didn't have a penny to our name, I’d stand on our little front porch and pretend I was performing for thousands of cheering people

I loved anything creative! Singing in school programs, writing poems, and telling stories were always my absolute favorite things to do

Well, before the big time, I sang on local radio and television shows in East Tennessee as a young girl, which felt like the most important job in the world at the time

I think I knew early on because music just lived inside my bones in a way that felt all-consuming. While other kids might have had different hobbies, music was my entire world

Packing up my bags the very day I graduated high school and heading straight to Nashville. It felt like just the natural next step, but it completely altered the course of my life

Getting the chance to perform on The Cas Walker Show when I was just a kid, and later joining The Porter Wagoner Show—that national television exposure opened doors I could only dream of

Overcoming the poverty of my childhood and trying to get people in the music industry to listen to a high-pitched mountain girl who wanted to do things her own way

Heavens no! Quitting just wasn’t in the Parton vocabulary. No matter how hard things got, giving up never crossed my mind because music was who I was

I am an early riser! I love to get up before everybody else, say a quiet prayer, get a cup of coffee, and start writing songs while the world is still quiet and peaceful

I probably would have been a beautician or worked in fashion design, because I’ve always loved big hair, makeup, and making things look sparkly and glamorous

It was simple, hardworking, and grounded in family. We made our own fun, played instruments on the porch, and relied on each other for everything

Some relationships shifted because I was traveling all the time, but my core family bonds stayed rock solid. True family loves you no matter what you're doing or where you are

That my cheerful attitude means I've never known pain or struggle. I’ve known plenty of hardship, but I just choose to look at the bright side of things

Oh, there were business deals and throat troubles where I couldn't sing, but I always just took a deep breath, trusted my faith, and worked twice as hard to fix it

It certainly changed my circumstances and let me build things like Dollywood and fund my Imagination Library, but deep down inside, I’m still just that same little mountain girl

Like anyone, I had private heartaches and health scares, but I always believed in keeping my chin up and carrying my burdens with grace rather than complaining

My mother, Avie Lee. She taught me about faith, strength, and how to love people, and my Uncle Bill Owens, who helped me get my foot in the door in the music business

It was full of music, writing, spending time with my wonderful husband Carl, and pouring all my love into my projects and charitable work

Once, my wig started sliding right off my head in the middle of a live performance because I was sweating under the stage lights, and I just had to laugh and adjust it right there on air

Probably some of my wildly expensive, glittering show costumes and elaborate wigs that cost more than a nice house back in my hometown

Find out who you are and do it on purpose! Don't let anybody mold you into something you're not, keep your faith strong, and always work harder than everyone else
